Natural Resource Wealth and Directed Technical Change

چکیده

This paper analyses the e¤ect of endogenous directed technical change in a resource-rich economy, embedding a version of Acemoglu’s model of directed technical change in a three-by-three trade theory model. Technical progress depends on entrepreneurs who either produce or adopt technology, and who endogenously choose which sector to operate in. The static e¤ect of a resource discovery is de-industrialization and a rise in non-resource factor incomes, as in standard trade theory. The dynamic e¤ect is to exacerbate the deindustrialization over time, but unless the discovery is large enough it leads to lower growth in non-resource factor incomes, which in the long run are lower than in the absence of the resource discovery. Thus if natural resources are owned by the government and other factors are owned by the private sector, then real private sector income may grow more slowly in a resourcerich economy than a resource-poor economy.

Natural Resources, Institutions Quality, and Economic Growth; A Cross-Country Analysis

Abstract[1] Natural resources as a source of wealth can increase prosperity or impede economic growth.  Empirical studies with different specifications and data are also mixed on whether natural resources are curse or blessing. In fact, the variety of model specifications, measurements, and samples in the empirical literature makes it difficult to generalize the results. In this study, a growth...

Transformational Change in Environmental and Natural Resource Management

It is widely agreed the Anthropocene has seen an unprecedented decline in the natural resources conditions that have underpinned the economic growth of the last few hundred years. As communities, we have not responded to Boulding’s vision of ‘the coming space ship earth’ although not for want of much official and private effort. As ‘wicked problems’ the impacts have been often ignored or off lo...

Comprehensive Wealth and Future Consumption: Accounting for Population Growth

Economic theory predicts that the current change in national wealth, broadly defined to include natural and human capital as well as produced capital (“genuine savings”), determines whether the present value of future changes in consumption is positive or negative. Theoretical research has focused on the effects of population growth on this relation, but no rigorous empirical investigation has ...

A method for analyzing the problem of determining the maximum common fragments of temporal directed tree, that do not change with time

In this study two actual types of problems are considered and solved: 1) determining the maximum common connected fragment of the T-tree (T-directed tree) which does not change with time; 2) determining all maximum common connected fragments of the T-tree (T-directed tree) which do not change with time. The choice of the primary study of temporal directed trees and trees is justified by the wid...
